New Suites, New Look!!

What does the world say about us...

Comfortable, friendly, and relaxing ... with a little something extra!
I have had the very great pleasure of staying at Mango Tree three times now in the last month or so. The main reason for this was the experience of the first visit, which never failed to be replicated and built upon in each successive stay. My first two stays were with family in the large family suite. Large is too small a word. The room was huge, and especially roomy for a group of 3 adults and two energetic kids. My most recent stay in the Courtyard Suite was like a little piece of heaven for me. A quirky room with a wonderful private courtyard space where I could relax, drink coffee and wind down after a stressful day. Apart from the environment and space, one of the most successful elements of this establishment is the service. I have travelled the world and don't think I have ever experienced more genuine and personal attention than I have here. One truly feels welcome and cared for, from the point the booking is made until the final goodbyes. As an expatriate in Malaysia, I also feel that their breakfast is a great introduction to local cuisine. It is varied, well made and very tasty. It's also plentiful, though my favourite part, as always is the espresso coffee (refills) I would highly recommend the Mango Tree to all kinds of travellers, and I can safely say that my trips to Penang will always include a stay there. I have become a content regular!

No doubt about it, best place we've ever stayed
Run by amazing people who will do all they can to make your stay in Penang as memorable as possible. Rooms are so full of character and you get 5 star service. We took our time finding accommodation in Penang and couldn't find a bad review for Mango Tree Place. I was worried it wouldn't live up to expectations but in fact, it exceeded them by miles. We had a fabulous time. Everyone is exceedingly friendly but somehow know exactly when to leave you in peace. In particular, it was such a pleasure meeting Charlie and Wei - they were so easy going and full of useful information about what to do in Penang. Charlie has legendary status in all the reviews and now we know why. What a star. Don't worry at all about Mango Tree Place being a bit out of the centre. You will love the peace and tranquillity of their street after hectic Georgetown. It only takes 20 mins to walk to Georgetown but they offer a free morning shuttle so it's easy to get a lift in and either walk back, catch a taxi (12-15 ringetts) or hop on a bus. Mango Tree is right in the middle of a great selection of restaurants - has amazing hawker food just across the road and they provide a superb breakfast of local foods (mixture of indian, chinese, malay). We stayed for 12 days (could have easily stayed longer) and seemed to have a different breakfast every morning. As we were leaving, they were just opening their own restaurant offering healthy vegetarian food - and I think an afternoon tea service. We had a delicious complimentary laksa (thank you Wei!) and based on that, I'm sure the restaurant will be a huge hit. Honestly, I can't think of anything negative. The suite was great - full of lovely touches like a mini fridge with complimentary soft drinks, complimentary snacks and a safe. There was a great coffee machine and you got two coffee pods each day (so you can wake up to good coffee). We were downstairs and the only time we were aware of our neighbours upstairs was when they passed through the communal area on the way out. This area had a computer which we didn't need but we did take advantage of the free WI-FI in the house which was very useful.

Fabulous B&B experience
Updated building offering really nice spacious accomodations. The owners are out of this world good to their guests. We loved the place. During our trip through Asia we had been staying at hotels and luxury resorts so the Mango Tree Place was a major change. I believe the place was built in 1934 and then updated with modern wiring and plumbing etc. All the amenities are there and the place is so spacious. Everything one could need.We had a two bedroom suite which worked well since there were three of us traveling. We had the entire top floor of the building we were in which gave us a great deal of privacy. We also had a shared living area on the first floor with computer and lots of room to work and relax. Translation- we had lots and lots of room. The included breakfast was wonderful. Each day featured new Malaysian dishes so that one was able to try a whole range of local foods every day. For those interested lunch was available in the same area for a mere pittance. However, the best part of the place was the care and treatment from the owners and staff. Just unbelievable. You come in strangers and leave friends. They will provide any advice you can imagine and its all good. Truly wonderful people. We also retained them to pick us up at the airport and take us back to the airport. Its a nice service if you want to make life easy.

Lovely lodge you can't go wrong with!
Location, clean spacious rooms, ambience, friendly suitekeeper and staffs
Suitekeeper was friendly welcoming us, and gave a detailed explanation of the areas around the lodge and other tourist locations. Rooms were nicely decorated, spacious and clean. The master room had a 2+1 couch. Bathroom was spacious, no bathtubs but the shower was good enough with sufficient water pressure, hot water and clear partitions. Green initiative is optional but worth encouraging, such as no daily changing of bedsheets and towels, which should be fine for short stays. free DVD loaning service to watch in the rooms which has a dvd player and limited cable tv channels, though DVDs are pirated, but it's fine with me. nice location just off Burma street. We rented a car so did not do much walking, but they had space for us to park the car in front of the unit. Wifi was available but reception might be alittle limited. It was fine in the master room, but the smaller room did not have reception. Wifi speed was more than acceptable.

We wanted to stay in a chinese architure home in penang and mtp is just the place. beautifully renovated on a quiet street with lots of eating places close by. the breakfast room has been renovated beautifully to resemble eating at an outdoor shoplot. malaysian breakfast a must to try. rooms large & comfortable. staff fantastic - thank you all. transport not a problem once you know the bus routes. we will defintely recommend this place to friends.

Big Master bedroom... Nice Breakfast... Great Suitkeepers !
A very big thank you to Mango tree !! Penang was definitely great island to visit with the help of the suitekeepers @ Mango Tree. The size of the master bedroom was huge and clean. The rooms definitely gave us a home feel. Bathroom was very comfortable too ! The suitekeepers were helpful and we were overwhelmed by their warmth.Breakfast was prepared with love. We were surprised by the variety of local dishes served in tiffin carriers. Our departure time was early in the morning and when we go back the night before, we saw a big basket of goodies prepared for our breakfast. It was really a sweet gesture :) We really love the place and would definitely go back again :)

Special stay, truly delightful small and friendly
Friendly helpful staff, tasteful decor excellent breakfast
my daughter and i stopped over in penang enroute to thaland and were thrilled with our visit the only downside was the shortness of our stay despite extending by another day. everyone seemed to want to go that extra mile! the bedroom was huge and tastefully furnished and the bed was wonderfully comfortable. i can not speak highly enough of this place. while in penang we decided to try out a heritage tour on a trishaw and were very impressed. loved the village on the sea.

What all boutique hotels should aspire to
Fantastic customer service, beautiful rooms, no effort spared for guests
this was one of the best hotels i have ever stayed in. the attention to detail of the hosts was amazing, they went the extra mile to ensure that your laundry was done, your restaurant reservations were taken care of, you got a lift into town, your local breakfast was cooked freshly every morning and your room was stocked with everything you might need for your trip. spotlessly clean, personal service, there is nothing to fault about the mango tree. also fantastic, cutting edge design incorporated into historical georgetown, so you are contributing to its preservation by staying there.

Sweet as a mango!
Artistic style, super friendly suitekeepers, comfortable abode.
the mango tree was my favourite accommodation of all the places i stayed over 2 weeks in malaysia. it is located on a quiet residential street not more than 5 minutes walk to the waterfront and maybe 15 min. to the famous eastern and oriental hotel. the room which is more like an apartment is part of a unit that is fronted by large foyer/livingroom with computer and internet access and tastefully furnished and artistically decorated. off the bedroom is a private courtyard with bench swing and large beautiful tropical plants with one large corner of the area cordoned off for a two room bathroom facility. the most attractive feature though were the 2 suitekeepers, charlie and wei, who not only made us feel guests in their home, but took us on a quick tour of georgetown in their car. not to mention serving us a delicious malaysian breakfast each morning. i would highly recommend this lovely boutique inn to any traveler looking for a pleasant and friendly stay in penang island.

Royal Room, nice location, wonderful staff
We stayed in a Terrace suit. the rooms were Royal, big, spacious and well maintained. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The restroom and the amenities/features provided in the suit were also very good. The suits are located centrally in George town and very near to all shopping complex, Heritage walk and well connected through public transport.

Original and stylish with personal service
size of the room, personal service of the inn-keepers, design and comfort
Mango Tree Place is a small (6 rooms) bed and breakfast with a high level of comfort and very friendly hosts that will give you the best service. The rooms are actually small size appartements with all the comfort you need. Furthermore the place is styled and decorated in an original and stylish fashion. The breakfast consists of a daily selection of local produce which is a nice touch because you get stuff that you wouldn't find on your own. All in all a great stay in Georgetown in a lot more original way than your big size standard hotel. Thanks to Charlie and the rest of the team for the nice stay.

Amazing rooms, great food and wonderful staff
We loved our stay at Mango Tree. was unbelievably helpful and welcoming when we arrived, providing great advise about activities in the area and what we might want to do considering our limited time frame. Penang is renowned for great food and Mango Tree was no exception, by far the best breakfast we have had in the several weeks we have been away. Our rooms were far larger than we could have imagined from the photos and immaculately clean. Would highly recommend to anyone.

Wonderful breakfasts, airy rooms
Friendly staff, great breakfasts, large rooms
a lovely, spacious retreat from the heat of penang. for the price-point, it has fewer amenities than expected, e.g., bath equipped only with shampoo and soap, and only one coffee-cartridge in the room, and no green tea. quibbles; overall it's lovely and we would definitely stay there again. keep a taxi card with you so you can show drivers where it is -- they won't know it and often won't even know the street. it's midway between e & o and gurney plaza -- a brisk 20 minute walk to either. don't walk it at night -- aside from any stranger-danger, there are holes, trenches, and other hazards that you need to be able to see.

Cute hotel with incredibly friendly staff
Good location - you can easily walk everywhere from hotel - either to gurney walk or to the city center. There are markets and plenty of restaurants near by. We had a garden suite, which is nicely decorated and very clean. It is a bit noisy, though - the room is facing the street. Wifi was very week and was only working near to the room door. Breakfast was good - local food (like rotti), sweets, fruit... and they have a delicious mango juice! Also the staff is very kind and attentive.

A place where every small detail are considered!
Warm reception and nicely furnished suite, with well thought-of breakfast served!
From the welcoming reception we had to leaving the next day, everything was pleasantly filled with warmth and cosy-ness. Great tips about touring Penang from the "Suitekeepers", followed by being nicely presented with the suite we were to stay in; greeted by a nicely arranged local breakfast the next day! When I said every small details were considered, you need to be there to see it for yourself! (e.g. a nice keyholder to hang your key; jazz music switched on when we were first brought there... etc.) It is too bad we only stayed a night!

Great staff and spacious rooms
Large, clean, comfortable, designer rooms and a great nights sleep
i stayed for three nights at the mango tree place and wish i could have stayed longer instead of moving on to bangkok. the room were spotlessly clean, large and comfortable and have that designer flair about them. the staff were also incredibly friendly and helpful and, as we were there over christmas, we were even invited to a gratis christmas dinner put on by the staff. charlie and her team made us feel very welcome. the small breakfast room was a great place to meet fellow travellers and discuss where we had been and what we had seen and the local breakfasts were delicious. i thoroughly enjoyed my stay and intend to return to see more of georgetown next year.

We stayed for three nights. We wanted a two rooms but instead of a hotel decided to try something different. We found the place on the net with decent reviews and decided to give it a try and we were not disappointed. Breakfast was a meal to look forward to with something different every day. Mark, Cedric and Uncle were friendly, helpful and knowledgable hosts at Mango Tree, which is actually three renovated heritage houses in a very attractive street. Each has one unit upstairs and one unit downstairs so it is like have having your own home in inner Penang. And it did feel like home when we returned from walking the heritage streets or hiking in the distant National Park. Plenty of food centres/local cafes very close. Old centre of town about 20 minutes walk away - but Cedric offers a lift to town in the mornings. Excellent local bus service to Mango Tree. As a bonus you do not need to eat lunch since breakfast is fantasic in quality, interest and quantity. Great stay; thanks Mango Tree

Fantastic boutique accommodation
Personal touch, local information, creative edge, large rooms,
My partner and I and our 1.5 year old stayed at Mango Tree Place for 5 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Much thought and effort has gone into creating intimate and atmospheric locally-run boutique accommodation and with success. Our Garden suite was wonderful including a large king size bed, as well as a separate lounge area where our baby slept in the cot provided. We also had an outdoor terrace area which was pleasant. Breakfasts were a real highlight, served in a lovely sun-drunched indoor courtyard, and always a surprise as a different local delicacy was revealed each day. Wei, Fredric and Mark were really helpful with local advice on places to eat and when to visit different attractions, and we always enjoyed returning home after a busy day in Georgetown or greater Penang. Mango Tree is situated in a quite, yet almost bohemian district, and while it's not too far from Georgetown proper, we did find that after a long day out and about, it was a bit of hike back with a stroller (footpaths are patchy) and so typically took cabs (only 10 ringgit!). While not at all feasible given the nature and location of Mango Tree Place, a swimming pool would have been great given the heat and humidity! All in all, a very memorable, lovely stay and would go back again! Mango Tree Place gives you a glimpse into Penangite culture which is all to rare in the large accommodations these days.

People, service, rooms, food, location
Whilst generally wary of B&B's, Mango Tree Place provided us a secluded lodge-like urban oasis. Located in George Town within a historic townhouse it has private, quiet and spacious air-conditioned rooms, friendly and helpful people, delicious breakfast options, and offers morning shuttle services to nearby local attractions and eateries. Mango Tree whilst of the periphery of George Town is no more than a 10min walk from UNESCO heritage area, and is near to bus services, or is only a cheap taxi fare away from numerous attractions. The people at Mango Tree were always pleasant and keen to help with any queries we had. At Mango Tree we felt a little more connected to the city but no less comforted than what we'd expected staying at a larger five-star hotel. If we were to go back to Penang we'd certainly stay again at Mango Tree.

Rooms generous, Clean and staff make you feel very welcome - highly recommended
Stayed for 2 days wished I could have extended for another 2 :) Travelled with my two teenage daughters, so booked the upstairs suite. Great move as it is located in a terraced building, and is set out well. Decor is very clean and trendy, rooms large and well appointed, TV DVD etc, Wi-fi is free and good signal. The upstair suite has bedrooms seperated by a lobby at the end of which was a private shower room and toilet. Breakfast superb, 3 different courses of local type food, bit sceptical at first but the taste was superb, staff at the hotel very friendly and helpful. Despite being close to town off Burma road (a main route) I found it to be extremely quiet at night, and had a great sleep. Will visit again
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : I booked for 2 days out of a 4 day trip to Penang - just in case it was not so good, unfortunately for me the place was booked up whilst I was there, so book for the whole time if you plan a long trip.

Very nice room, large in size, clean and classic decorations. Big Malaysia style breakfast in high quality. Staff with excellent service. Location is not bad, but the street around the stay is quite dark with many dogs. The location should be quite, but dogs kept baking all night... and rooster started crowing at very early morning (around 4am). I think I should bring a pair of earplugs… Except this, this hotel is nearly perfect.

Hotel Feature Tip : as metered taxi are practically non-existent in penang, traveling by rapid bus is the best way to get around or alternatively drive a rental car. if you are traveling by penang rapid bus, getting to mtp from airport or george town central is easy. however, because the main burma rd is one way, to use penang rapid bus, it is inconvenient if you are arriving from batu ferringhi to mtp or returning from mtp via bus back to the banyan lepas airport.

And the staffs (owner) do really care about their guests .. If you're so busy and can't go to have breakfast , they will just give you foods right away ... everything is really great here .. I 1000% surely recommend this .. and pretty good for couple too (the place) .. quiet and near komtar and some nightlife too . :)
Restaurant Tip : There's lots of restaurant near this hotel ... One is the steam boat restaurant , where you can get anything you want and cook it on your table ... eat all you can ! :D

Feels like you have your own little house to stay in
Good, helpful service - they will drive you into town in the morning. I even got dropped off at the bus station and was helped onto the right bus. Nothing is too much trouble. Very interesting arrangement as you get the key to what feels like your very own little terrace house. Spacious room however I felt a bit shut in and dark (my room had a black wall which isn't really my thing but the other rooms on the website look better). Also, breakfast is served in the main house next door and it is very nicely done, but again, all inside and a feeling of being shut in. I must point out that I am very much an outdoors person and like to have the feeling of space around me, so I am sure that the set up at this hotel would not bother most people. Above all, very helpful and friendly staff in a good location as you are about 25minutes walking from Georgetown city centre so are on the quieter residential streets.
Restaurant Tip : Lots of good restaurants within 10 minutes walk of the hotel - many on the streets just behind the hotel. The hotel provide you with a great map of where you can eat. They also give you a walking tour map and lots of local history information - all very interesting and useful.

turning into the street, you will notice colorful townhouses line the sides. as soon as the taxi stopped, a hotel staff member rushed out to welcome us. this service was on par with a 5-star resort in langkawi! the room itself was amazing.anyway, i'll mention again how great the staff was. i would highly recommend this place! like i said, most interesting place i've ever stayed at!

comfortable, great service
The Mango Tree Place is a well-designed place which let you feel like staying in your home. We were staying in a garden suite. There are 3 different types of garden suites design and all of them are very nice. You may use the common living room to access to the internet, there is a desktop in the living room. The place is quite peaceful although it is located in the center of the city. Moreover, the so called "suite keepers" there are all very friendly and helpful. They prepare local specialty food as breakfast to you and you may request for the food you like. (This time they prepare us curry noodles, which I personally think is too heavy, but no complaint about it because it was my fault not telling them what we prefered.) Overall, the place is perfect and you need to have a camera with you for sure. You might want to reduce the time for hanging around to enjoy the ambience.

Spacious and Decoration
It's my first time to come to Penang and it's very nice to stay at Mango Tree Place for 2 nights. My husband stayed there last year when he stopped by last time and this was definitely recommended by him that we should stay here this time. The couple - housekeeper are friendly and talk with us. We have also asked about the travel information and they are supplying as much info as they can. When I got inside the room, it's so spacious and the decoration on wall, the paint they used, are nice and quite remarkable to make the room feel comfortable to stay. If I must have to say one minor shortcoming, it would be the lighting inside the room. Not enough lightings and a bit dark to read at night inside the room.
Restaurant Tip : The Sire Museum Restaurant - with fusion food and free entry to this historical building.

the hotel is located just off the main rd. its very close to gurney drive and only about a 15min walk from chulia st. service treated us very well, even offered to take us to certain places with his own car. the hotel room itself is very spacious, more than enough for luggages and shopping bags. the best feature is the shower install, a must try! it also has a study room with a fold out double bed/couch. all in all though, a really recommended hotel.

Good location, spacious rooms, lovely staff
The rooms are nicely designed and spacious, while the staff was very friendly. If you are looking for a quiet place to recharge your batteries and you want to taste local street food, this hotel offers plenty of that.Ask the staff for places to go and eat and they will advise you. The place exudes warmth and familiarity that a large chain hotel can't give you.
Restaurant Tip : The old green house hawker on Burma road will offer good street food while Burma square, on Burma Road, will offer more upscale food. Take a walk to Gurney Drive (30 min) for a wide variety of hawker food, and walk into Georgetown (30 min) and you will find a quaint rustic cafe on Armenian street called Cafe Amelie.

We stayed at the Mango Tree Place in early March for 4 nights and were very pleased with our choice. The suite was quaint and private with its own courtyard, situated in a lovely restored heritage property. Wei and her staff were extremely helpful in all respects. The location is very good, the bed was extremely comfortable, and the breakfasts were very enjoyable with an assortment of Malaysian choices. We don't hesitate to recommend.

This place is situated in a quiet part of the GeorgeTown. You required to show the driver map in order to get to there. This time round we drove and with the GPS aid we can easily get to the hotel. It provides a simple & fresh feeling to tourist. Location is very near to most places of interest which is one of the main advantage. Toilet is not attached to the room and at the other corner of the room. Free parking right outside of the house and in the night, it is very safe.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : If you can afford, drive and enjoy the different sight of Penang.

Hotel is located on a beautifully restored historical block, short walk from Georgetown and Gurney Drive, a water prominade which is very pleasant. There are many restaurants located within a 5 minutes walk from the hotel which is also very convenient. Breakfast was great - a combination of Penang delicacies. Staff was extremely helpful and gave us many hints on how to prioritise our time to see the most important attractions and how long each trip would take.

The Mango tree place was a great little find and we really enjoyed staying here for the four nights. The rooms where very nice with comfortable beds, plenty of room and a contemporary design. The small court yard was also a bonus as it added a wonderful feeling of privacy especially when raining outside. The breakfasts offered a nice variety of local snack food which changed from day to day. The roti chanai was excellent and is a must in malaysia.

Good location, refurbished well, lots of character.
mtp is essentially three well refurbished colonial terrace houses turned into a small b&b with several (i think she said 4?) rooms. rooms are spacious and equipped with everything you'd need, and the garden suite i had also had a separate sitting room (not airconditioned though, unlike the bedroom) and a courtyard. the entrance to the suite itself takes on the look of the old pre-war buildings in the surrounding area, with old wood doors and shutters (along with a postbox), and a collapsing sliding grille. access to the suite is via keycard at the main entrance, and after passing by the communal living room (with wifi and a communal desktop pc), one has to rely on an old fashioned but very effective padlock to enter the room. decor is a eclectic mash-up of old refurbished bits and modern fittings and decorations, with the mtp logo frequently appearing on walls and pictures and funky murals. room switches hark back form the '60s, and the exposed clay tiles/wood rafters in the bedroom makes it feel that you're in a really rustic place. breakfast is served in the quaint courtyard of the unit housing the reception and comprised of local delights and kuih in a tiffin carrier, which was a pleasant surprise. plenty of restaurants (including supper-friendly late-night hawker fare) barely a few minutes walk away, as well as a convenience store. there's a fair amount to see and do in penang, so the central location is pretty good. it's just off the main road in a fairly dimly lit street, so i'd be a bit vigilant when walking around at night. be aware of the loud and slightly intrusive wake-up call of cockerels nearby, you might well think you've spent your night in a farmyard.
Restaurant Tip : Green House hawker store just across Burma Road. Opens real late, and is only 3 mins walk away. Hokkien mee & prawn mee are recommended.

Free transport to center, excellent free breakfast, staff exceedingly friendly and helpful.
We had a fantastic stay at Mango Tree Place. Wei, the manager, is very knowledgeable about Penang and very helpful. The property includes several standalone homes that have two guest spaces in each (one on the top floor and one on the ground floor). During our stay there was nobody staying on the top floor, so we had a lot of privacy and space. The breakfast served at Mango Tree and free private transportation into Penang center in the morning were also huge hilights. The only two drawbacks were that the wifi signal was too weak to be usable from our room and we had to use it from the common area. There is also a rooster living in one of the nearby yards. The noise it makes in the morning could be considered good atmosphere, or annoying. Overall though, we were happy with Mango Tree Place.

not the typical run of the mill hotel
the best thing was probably the service - the staffs were friendly and helpful. Towels were clean. Room was spacious though a touch basic. The rooms could do with a couple more carpets and one or two comfortable sofa type chairs. Shower head was good but drainage was less than desirable. There is no separation between the toilet and shower compartments, water would just splash over to the other side and sipped through the floor when one take a shower. This can be quite depressing if there is another person using the toilet.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Penang is a wonderful place if you admire architecture and a eclectic mix of culture.

Nice design and excellent service
if you're looking for hotel that feels like home this is the place. from the very start we felt like friends and not 'revenue', even a mix up with the booking (my fault completely) was taken in their stride and we weren't made to pay to alter our stay, which was a great start to any stay when travelling on a budget. the room was massive, king size bed and an outdoor courtyard area. we had everything we wanted, an when my girlfriend wanted a break from spicy penang food, they even lent us a toaster an drove me to the supermarket to buy bread... all the staff were fantastic, especially the manageress wei!... and judging by the reviews of this place on the internet, that is the standard level of service you can look forward to at the mango tree place :-) thank you, rob and helen ps. breakfast of malaysian food (although spicy at times) was great too!. Mango Tree Place is totally unique. The design is super creative and imaginative. There are new things to discover all over the place (this extends to breakfast - you'll see!) The charm of the building and the personal attention of the owner
Mango Tree Place is one of a number of old Chinese houses in a quiet side street off Jalan Burma that have been converted to take guests. It is really a kind of 'homestay'. The suites are roomy with a small courtyard and a communal lounge with internet access. Air conditioning is only available in the bedroom, which meant the rest of the house is very warm The suite was service daily and bottled water provided. Traditional Malay, Indian or Chinese breakfast was also provided and on the two days where we were the only guests, the owner took us to her favourite restaurants in town, rather than buying it in. On a couple of occasions she also took us to places of interest in her car. Cons -
Restaurant Tip : Walking distance to Gurney Drive where there were very good foodstalls and other restaurants, as well as Gurney Plaza for shopping.

Go the extra mile service
We wanted to stay somewhere with a bit of luxury, although we are on a budget, while in Penang due to an incident involving a moped and a pole in Thailand. Mango Tree certainly was that. There are only two rooms in this small guesthouse/boutique hotel - although there are plans to expand to add another two. But the rooms are more like suites - including massive bathroom/wetroom, tastefully designed bedroom with desk and sitting area and even an outdoor courtyard for evening drinks. This place is quirky and fun with lots of really interesting design features. But the best bit? Without a doubt - the service. Wei is more like a personal tour guide than an innkeeper and goes out of her way to show you around Georgetown and help with onward travel arrangements. She even gave us lifts into town everyday that we stayed. And on our last day, with a late bus to catch to the Perhentian Islands, we were graciously allowed to go back and shower in the evening after a day's hiking (well worth it) in the nearby national park. Go to Mango Tree Place - you won't regret it. Cons - None
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Check out the national park on the tip of Penang - hike of just over an hour brings you to sensational beaches where turtles come to lay their eggs. Much nicer beaches than over-crowded, polluted Batu Ferringhi

Personal top-end service, excellent breakfast, private and spacious
We actually expected to get a room in someone's house. Not so. We got the entire top floor of a beautifully restored Chinese house in a quiet, charming, little street. The terrace suite. It consisted of a large bedroom with all amenities, a large shower room, an extra room and then some. It's tastefully and cutely decorated, but not designers' heaven, which makes it liveable and homely. Downstairs is another suite and a joint living room with a computer with internet access. So, men, this is where your girlfriends already got very happy. But it gets better. One of the owners, a 30-something, well-traveled, supernice girl called Wei gives you that relaxed feel that you only get with your friends. She fixes you up with too much excellent breakfast, drives you 'round to start you off on your day and will take her friends and co-owner to join you in watching the football world cup (so, wait 'till the next world cup if you want to do this too). In short, you feel as if you've gained a friend. The location is excellent in our view, because you wouldn't come here if you were staying at the Eastern & Oriental. By the way, we were hesitating between the two accomodations and the personal space and service can in no way be had at the E&O. Anyway, all around The Mango Tree Place are truly excellent restaurants. A 10 mins walk will take you to a very relaxed and extensive food court by the sea. Good things are happening right around you. Taxidrivers won't know the street you're staying though, so bring a map to show them. In short, a place you could live in, friends are already included. This is a must-go b&b. Cons - We were actually sad to leave
